Without an Internet connection, a smartphone is just like any other multimedia phone because various apps and software are its strength that make it smart. Without an active Internet connection, apps and software may not work and it means that these software programs and apps take up a lot of your internet bandwidth. If you don’t have an unlimited plan and totally rely on mobile data for your Android smartphone, your bandwidth should get over pretty soon. Because some apps that are running in the background use the internet. Communication apps like WhatsApp, Messenger need to be connected to the internet whereas other apps do not really need to be connected always. Therefore, if you are Android smartphone user and have limited Internet plan, you need to limit the internet usage of apps on your smartphone.

Fortunately, you always have options to block internet access in specific apps on Android if you want to do so. You can restrict internet for specific apps on Android natively through Android’s built-in options or you using a third party app. So, let’s take a look at how you can do so:

Restrict Background Data on Android Natively

Android gives you the option to easily set background data restrictions for specific apps on it. To apply restriction, head over to Settings->Apps and choose the app you want to block background data for.

To make sure that the app does not fetch any mobile data while running in the background, tap on “Data usage” and enable “Restrict app background data” on the App Info page. However, the app will use the internet if you open it.

If you want to restrict background data for all the apps, go to Settings->Data usage, tap on the three-dot button and then on “Restrict background data”. You can also set a monthly mobile data limit to limit the usage so that you may come to know when your mobile data is about to getting over.

Android N has a Data Saver mode to restrict the background data on all apps. However, you can choose the application you want to enable unrestricted data access for.

If you want to only restrict usage on mobile data, the native Android methods work fine, But if you want to block mobile data as well as Wi-Fi connectivity for certain apps there are third party apps for ypur help.

Third Party Apps to Block Mobile Data and WiFi

There are a few good apps that let you block internet for specific apps, but here Mobiwol is suggested because it brings most of the features you would need without any cost. So, install it on your Android smartphone and follow the instructions:

  1. You will see the home page of the app Mobiwol when you first open it. All of its main options will be listed upfront. Go to “Firewall Rules“, here you will see all the apps on your device including the system apps. Just tap on the mobile network & WiFi icon for disabling the respective connections for the app.

Also be careful while disabling the connection and do not block system apps otherwise, you may experience inconsistent performance and unexpected behaviour of your device.

  1. Once done, return to the main page of Mobiwol and turn on “Firewall Status”. The app will make a VPN connection request as soon as you turn on “Firewall Status”. Next tap on “Ok” and the firewall will be turned on.

Mobiwol and other similar firewall apps create a VPN connection to filter the internet connection on your device so that they can restrict usage on blocked apps.

  1. Now check it if you have done it right or not. Try to open the blocked apps. If they do not have internet access, you have done it right. Mobiwol also allows you to check those apps that are using the Internet connection in the background via “Connection Logs”.

Other than that, with this app, you can also check out the app settings to verify that it accepts or blocks newly installed apps, auto-starts on reboot, get log notifications and its frequency and receive tips about the app.

If you are looking for a more feature rich app, below some apps are given that will allow you to block internet in specific apps:

NoRoot Firewall

NoRoot Firewall is a highly popular and feature rich firewall app that has a lots of advanced capabilities. The app lets you block mobile data/WiFi access for apps, set custom filters and conditions based on IP address, domain name and host address. It is available for free and worth to try.

NetGuard is another great firewall app. It is a feature rich app that not only blocks internet access for specific apps but also allows using conditions like block internet while roaming and allow WiFi/mobile data when screen is on. NetGuard also supports multiple device users, tethering and more.

If you just want to restrict background data usage for apps, you can easily do it on Android, but if you want to block internet access altogether for unwanted apps, aforementioned third party apps are good to rely on. These apps work great but they bring only one limitation i.e. VPN, that may lower down your internet speed a bit.
