While trying to install OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 or iTunes 12.2, it has been reported by many users that the Mac App Store freezes, with a consistent spinning cursor and the updates never gets downloaded and continue to show up the spinning cursor. It has been noticed in further investigations which reveal that a process named ‘softwareupdated’ simultaneously goes haywire and keeps 99% of CPU resources busy for an indeterminate period of time if left unattended. If you are experiencing either of these issues while making an attempt to install the aforementioned updates, there are many possible solutions to this, but to do so you need to temporarily circumvent the App Store in either case.

If this issue encounters while attempting to update Mac, you may resolve it by manually installing iTunes from the command line software update mechanism, because it avoids the App Store.

If softwareupdate is consuming significant CPU resources, kill the process using the following Terminal command:

Next, use the following command string to install iTunes 12.2 update manually:

Once you install iTunes 12.2, there will no update available and everything else will work well in the App Store as usual.

Some users reported that the problem has persisted with the actual OS X 10.10.4 update also.

To install OS X 10.10.4, you can either attempt to download and use the Combo Updater or update from the command line. Take the backup of all your system and other important files beforehand, like you would do in case of any other system update.

Use the following command string to initiate the OS X 10.10.4 installation from the Terminal:

To complete the installation, restart your machine.

If you use these command lines, it’ll results in the software updates in the same version as you are downloading from the Mac App Store. This is just a way to avoid the application itself hanging or freezing for whatever reason.
