Use these steps are for the current version of the Norton products. If you don’t know your product version or have an older version, go to Norton Update Center.

Norton Errors

Step 1: Restart your computer

  • Close all programs.
  • Restart your computer.

Step 2: Run LiveUpdate

  • Run your Norton product.
  • Click Security in the main window, and then click LiveUpdate.
  • Click OK when Norton LiveUpdate is finished.
  • Run LiveUpdate till the time the message, “Your Norton product has the latest protection updates” doesn’t appear.
  • Close all the programs, and restart the computer.

Step 3: Update your virus definitions

  • Go to the Intelligent Updater downloads page.
  • Do one of the following as per your version of Windows, do one of the following:
  • For Windows (32-bit): Under Filename, click the first file in the list. The file name includes its year in the starting and ends with v5i32.exe. e.g. 20070828-017-v5i32.exe
  • For Windows (64-bit): Open the 64-bit Platforms section, and click the first file in the list under Filename. The file name follows its year and ends with v5i64.exe. e.g. 20090922-017-v5i64.exe
  • Save the file location to the Windows desktop.
  • Double-click the file that you saved on the desktop.
  • Install the virus definitions using Intelligent Updater by following the on-screen instructions.

If the problem still exists, it may be possible that your computer is infected. If your computer is infected by a threat, it’s recommend that you download and run Norton Power Eraser to check and Go to Step 4.

Step 4: Download and run Norton Power Eraser

  • Install Norton Power Eraser.
  • Click Save.
  • Choose the location as Desktop, and then click Save.
  • Double-click the NPE.exe file to run Norton Power Eraser.
  • Click Yes or Continue when the User Account Control window prompts.
  • Read the license agreement before accepting it.
  • Click the Scan for Risks icon in the Norton Power Eraser window.
  • Norton Power Eraser performs a Rootkit scan by default and requires a system restart. Click Restart to restart the computer when you see a prompt to do so. Go to Settings, and uncheck the option Include Rootkit scan if you do not want to include the Rootkit scan (requires a computer restart).
  • Wait till the scan completes.
  • Close all the programs, and restart your computer.
