Spam mail! Be cautious of it. You can call it as junk email or unsolicited bulk email (UBE). Don’t take it otherwise. It is a subset of spam involving nearly identical messages and usually sent to numerous recipients. Ham is the opposite of Spam. It is a subset of UBE and known as UCE (Unsolicited Commercial Email).


The steady increase of growth is a true reality in case of Spam since the early 1990s. Expense of Spam is to be borne mostly by the recipient and Botnets, networks of virus-infected computers, are responsible for about 80% of spam.

This has a different status in different countries. US, however, declared the same as legal by the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003. The criteria should be the messages must adhere to certain specifications. Don’t ever try to lodge a lawsuit against spammers as you will surely be a loser in collecting damages in spite of winning in court.

There is a wide range of source for spammers. It may be chat rooms, websites, customer lists, newsgroups, etc. Epending is a useful tool for spammers to search for the email address of the targeted one. It is a rather amazing fact that spam averages 78% of all email.

Anti-spam technique is a very useful technique for preventing spam. However, it should be kept in mind that no technique is the permanent solution to the spam problem. Each has trade-offs between incorrectly rejecting legitimate e-mail vs. not rejecting all spam, and of course the associated costs in time and effort.

  1. Reducing or Preventing E-mail Spam

There are so many techniques to prevent E-mail spam-

  • Discretion- The sharing of e-mail address should be limited to group members only. Therefore, while forwarding messages to an unknown person “bcc” should be used instead of after “To”. Thus the unscrupulous practice of collecting e-mail id for spamming purposes should be reduced.
  • Address munging- Here posting should be done anonymously in order to avoid email address harvesting. Thus, users can alter their e-mail addresses in order to receive legitimate email and as a result human can figure out that but spammers cannot.
  • Avoid Responding to Spam- This is the best way to avoid spam. It may be the case that someone respond to spam before cancellation. Thus, it may result into the reposting of spam. Replying may result in false linked as part of the spam message.

 There may also exist other options to prevent Spam. These are-

  • Contact forms
  • Disable HTML in e-mail
  • Disposable e-mail addresses
  • Ham Passwords
  • Reporting Spam
